Build my prototype

Why GrayMatter

Don't write the requirements document. Show us the problem.

Most organisations spend months deciding what to build, and then discover the real problem was different the moment someone actually used it. Our whole way of working is built around skipping that discovery to the front.

  • Prototype first
  • One ecosystem
  • Human in the loop
  • People measured

The problem

Your dashboard is a rear-view mirror with a very good resolution.

Two decades of business intelligence solved visibility. Almost nobody solved the part that comes after it.

01

The report arrives after the month it describes

By the time the number is confirmed, the window to do anything useful about it has closed. Reporting is a record of decisions you can no longer make.

02

The signal is real, but it is split across systems

Sales knows demand is softening. Finance knows a distributor is stretching terms. Operations has already committed the purchase order. All three are right and none of them can see the others.

03

The insight exists, and then nothing happens

Someone builds the analysis. It goes into a deck. The deck goes into a meeting. The meeting produces an action item. Three weeks later the conditions have changed.

None of this is a data problem. Every one of these companies has the data. It is a distance problem — between knowing and doing.

Why now

The scarce thing keeps moving. It just moved again.

Every generation of business technology made one thing abundant and shifted the advantage to the next bottleneck. Data got cheap. Dashboards got cheap. What is still expensive is the distance between a signal appearing and an organisation doing something about it.

  1. 1995 — 2010

    Having the data

Whoever could collect and store it

  2. 2010 — 2024

    Seeing the data

Whoever could report on it fastest

  3. From here

    Acting on the data

Whoever can shorten the distance between signal and action

If a competitor compresses that distance from weeks to hours, they do not beat you on any single decision. They beat you on all of them, continuously, and the gap compounds quietly until it shows up in price, service or margin.

We are not claiming this has already happened to your market. We are saying the cost of being late to it is asymmetric, and the cheapest time to find out is on one contained problem.

The shift

Same data. Same people. Same decision. A different amount of elapsed time.

The way it works now

Days to weeks

  1. Data sits in six systems
  2. Someone exports it to Excel
  3. A dashboard is refreshed
  4. It is noticed in a weekly meeting
  5. Discussion, then a follow-up meeting
  6. A decision is taken
  7. Approval is chased
  8. Someone finally acts

With GrayMatter

Minutes to hours

  1. Data is read across systems
  2. A signal is detected
  3. A forecast is produced, with its reasoning
  4. A specific action is recommended
  5. A named human approves, modifies or rejects Human
  6. The workflow executes
  7. The outcome is tracked back to the decision

Why GrayMatter

Four positions we are willing to be held to.

Not advantages. Positions. Each one costs us something, which is how you can tell we mean them.

01

The prototype comes before the proposal

You should see the thing before you decide about the thing. So we do not open with a document. We open with something you can click, and the commercial conversation happens after you have tested it, not before.

Instead of: a forty-page proposal

02

One ecosystem, not fifteen vendors

The intelligence layer, the applications that run the organisation and the people who build what is missing come from one company with one way of working. When something does not fit, the answer is a prototype, not a procurement cycle.

Instead of: integrating six suppliers

03

A human approves anything consequential

The system recommends; a named person decides, and the approval is recorded against everything that follows. Anything touching clinical or student outcomes is advisory to a qualified professional, always. This is a design position, not a limitation we intend to remove.

Instead of: automation nobody can interrogate

04

We measure what happens to the people

Every vendor will tell you how much work they removed. We think that number is meaningless on its own, so we measure what your people did with the capacity, and we are building a pathway for the people trying to enter work at all.

Instead of: counting jobs removed

The full point of view, and what we refuse to do

What we refuse to do

Four things you will not get from us, on purpose.

We will not open with a proposal

If we cannot show you something you can click, we have not understood the problem yet. The document comes after the prototype, and it is shorter for it.

We will not sell you a company-wide AI strategy

One contained problem, one number agreed in advance, one prototype, one build. Scale is earned by results, not promised in a deck.

We will not automate a consequential decision without a person

The system recommends; a named human approves, and the approval is recorded. Clinical, diagnostic and student-outcome decisions are advisory to a qualified professional, always.

We will not claim what we cannot show

No customer logos we do not have, no certifications we do not hold, no numbers we cannot defend out loud. Every product screen on this site says it is illustrative, because it is.

A sentence about what is slow, manual or missing is enough. We come back with a view on the fastest useful thing to put in front of you, and an honest answer on whether we are the right people to build it.
